Derrick is a Director of the School Launch and Incubation. In this role, he leads strategy, programming, and supports for entrepreneurs approved to launch new innovative public schools in the nation’s capital. He supports school founders and their leadership teams beginning in their planning year and concluding after their third year of operations.
Previously, Derrick was an Associate Partner on the Innovative Schools team at NewSchools Venture Fund. There, he led sourcing, diligence, selection, and grants management for investments in new innovative school models nationally. A Teach For America alumnus, earlier in his career, Derrick was a Lead Teacher and then a School Leader at Success Academy Charter Schools. His students consistently ranked among the top 1% in math and top 2% in reading in New York State, and his school was named a National Blue Ribbon School. Derrick began his career as an analyst at Goldman Sachs in their Human Capital Management division, supporting programming, strategy, and analysis across talent management with a focus on diversity.
Derrick earned a master’s degree in education from Stanford University, where he was awarded a tuition fellowship and was a Rathbun Fellow. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morehouse College, where he was a Gates Millennium Scholar and an Oprah Winfrey Scholar. Derrick serves on the Investment Committee of the Detroit Children’s Fund, an education funder in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
